A native of Plymouth, Minn., Barber was drafted in the fourth round of the 2005 draft by the Cowboys after a productive college career at Minnesota. He immediately became a key member of the Dallas offense, scoring a combined 33 touchdowns in his first three seasons.

Barber, who was 38 at the time of his death, died of heat stroke, according to a report from the Collin County Medical Examiner’s Office obtained by PEOPLE. The manner of his death has been ruled an accident.
Heatstroke is a serious condition caused by your body overheating, usually as a result of prolonged exposure to or physical exertion in high temperatures, and can occur if one’s body temperature rises to 104 F (40 C) or higher, according to Mayo Clinic.

Frisco, Texas, police found Barber dead in his apartment Wednesday, per the Fort-Worth Star Telegram. The cause of death is not yet known.
“Frisco Police responded to a welfare concern at an apartment believed to be leased by Marion Barber,” Police spokesperson Joshua Lovell told the Star-Telegram. “Frisco Police along with the Collin County Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating an unattended death at the location.”
